As a constituent, I know the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of college students across the country. From the loss of jobs, increased housing costs, loss of work-study, and the continued burden of tuition, millions of students are hurting and at risk of dropping out of school. But you and your colleagues in the Senate can act and stand up for the next generation of our nation's community leaders.
Introduced by Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) S.4465, The Emergency Grant Aid for College Students Act would authorize a grant program to provide emergency grants to college students to help them get through unanticipated emergencies. Their campus would administer the grants and, unlike a student loan, would not need to be repaid.
Students like myself attend institutions of higher education to pursue the ideals of knowledge, to better ourselves, and to strengthen our communities. In times of crisis, there is nothing more American than standing up for our neighbors to support our most vulnerable. I am writing today to ask that you and your colleagues stand with our nation's students during this crisis and vote to move S. 4465 forward.
