Prioritize Main Street and historic preservation!

Dear [title] [last name],

I am writing to support historic preservation and Main Street priorities in the upcoming budget cycle. Our historic places help anchor our communities through difficult times by reminding us of where we come from and the stories we share, and Washington Main Street is a major driver of downtown revitalization, economic development, and community placemaking in Washington State.

I respectfully ask you to fund the following programs and initiatives:

1. Support Main Street!

  • Increase funding for the Washington State Main Street Program (administered by the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation) to $350,000 annually so it can ramp up direct economic recovery services to communities across the state at this critical time.
  • Enhance the Main Street tax credit program to increase local funding for Main Street organizations.
  • Support the newly proposed capital grant program for Main Streets at $5,000,000 to directly benefit small businesses through physical improvements to their properties.

2. Fund historic preservation capital grant projects!

I support all four capital grant programs that have been proposed for funding through the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation:

  • Historic Courthouses at $2,932,254
  • Heritage Barns at $1,500,000
  • Historic Cemeteries at $500,000
  • Historic Theaters at $1,000,000 (double what the Governor proposed)

3. Help restore the Dr. Nettie Craig Asberry House!

Please support the $800,000 the Governor pledged to assist the Tacoma City Association of Colored Women’s Clubs (CWC) in acquiring the Dr. Asberry House and transforming it an educaitonal and community space.

4. Support history through the Washington State Historical Society!

I support fully funding Heritage Capital Projects at $9,161,000 and also funding the newly proposed Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Internship Program at $250,000.

Now is the time to activate the power of the Washington Main Street network and invest in the historic assets that keep Washington's communities resilient, rooted, and connected.

Thank you!
