I was shocked to read about radiation experiments on animals conducted at the Medical College of Wisconsin and approved by your committee. These experiments consist of some of the worst cruelty to animals and utilize an outdated methodology that is both inhumane and inefficient.
It is the responsibility of the IACUC to determine that appropriate criteria for humane endpoints are in place and that animals do not suffer extreme distress. One experiment deemed that euthanasia would not be carried out until the animals were “emaciated with prominent skeletal structures.” This constitutes extreme cruelty and must not continue.
Additionally, the IACUC must ensure that appropriate alternatives to the use of animals should be considered. The radiation experiments at the MCW should be suspended because of their inexcusable cruelty and failure to embrace modern research methods.
