Remember back in 2021 when everyone in the US with kids got an extra few hundred dollars per month in their bank accounts? And then research showed that it (the expanded federal child tax credit) cut child poverty by 40%? We thought that was pretty great! Unfortunately, efforts to make that expansion permanent at the federal level have stalled. But we’re not giving up - we are advocating for a state level child tax credit.

Evidence from the expanded federal child tax credits in 2021 has sparked momentum in several states to develop similar types of income supports to help families make ends meet, and to take steps toward ending child poverty. The Nebraska Legislature will consider a state-level child tax credit this year, LB 294, introduced by Senator Danielle Conrad.

LB 294 would provide an annual refundable tax credit up to $1,000 per child (for each child under age 18) for families that fall within certain income levels. Analysis from OpenSky shows that about half of all Nebraskans, including about 81% of our state’s children, would benefit under LB 294.

How would LB294 help your family? Help us show senators that this is important to Nebraska families across the state.
