Please, vote NO on HB306 and HB1411 in Education Administration Committee on March 22.
HB306: The amendment made the bill worse. The bill now uses TSSAA to force private schools into situations where they have to discriminate against transgender athletes. What precedent does this set for using TSSAA to regulate private schools in other ways? This is government overreach and the bill sends a terrible message to all transgender students regardless of whether they are involved in sports.
HB1411: Even as amended, the bill still has the burdensome requirement of opting in for parts of the curriculum, surveys, and clubs and activities, which takes up the time of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. But it adds provisions about sexual orientation and gender identity that have already been covered by a bill passed in 2021 that was sponsored by Rep. Moody. The bill also does not explicitly address students who are 18. Are they required to get these permissions? That issue must be addressed.
