<p>Please, vote NO on SB918 when it is on the Senate floor on April 19.</p> <p><strong>The legislation is not needed.</strong> The United States flag is not under any threat and does not need this legislation for it to be honored and protected. A June 2022 YouGov poll showed that the U.S. flag is far more popular than a variety of political and cultural flags among American adults. You can see the results at this link: https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/06/29/how-americans-view-flags-and-symbols-poll . The House sponsor could not come up with any incident or deficiency in flag flying that led to this proposal.</p> <p><strong>Vague enforcement and the First Amendment:  </strong>When questioned on the House floor last week, the sponsor of the bill answered that there is no enforcement spelled out for the bill. That could mean that the bill has no teeth and that there will be no enforcement or it could mean that there will be selective enforcement. Selective enforcement could look like some cities or campuses observing the law and others disregarding it. Selective enforcement could also take the form of harsher action being taken against some flags versus others. That is where a real First Amendment concern comes into the bill. Please, do not adopt any meausre like this that opens the door to arbitrary enforcement. It leads to confusion for local officials, campus administrators, and the public.</p>
