California’s Paid Family Leave Program has been a lifeline for caregivers since its inception in 2002. However, as our families become more diverse there is a large subset of the caregiving population that has been excluded from accessing this important benefit. According to a study conducted by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving found that 11% of care partners care for someone who is not related to them by blood and an additional 5% of care partners care for a relative who is not considered immediate family. I strongly feel that these individuals should be entitled to the Paid Family Leave benefits that they already contribute to, and AB 518 would expand this program to meet this need. Aging or disabled members of the LGBTQIA population would benefit greatly from this law as well, due to the increased likelihood that they receive care from a member of their “chosen family”. I urge you to support AB 518 so that California’s Paid Family Leave Program is equitable and accessible to all types of families.
