As a concerned citizen, I urge you to support HB 1426, establishing an independent advisory redistricting commission. This bill would provide the legislature a set of fair maps, drawn by the commission with public input, for consideration at the start of the legislative session. In recent years, New Hampshire has had a problem with partisan redistricting that skews the maps in favor of the majority party, resulting in maps that don't accurately reflect the population.
Look at the votes cast for the state Senate and those for the Executive Council. More than 50% of the votes were cast by those voting for the Democratic candidates in both the Senate races and those of the Executive Council. So how were 58% of senators and 80% of executive councilors elected Republican if our maps are fairly drawn?
Having an independent advisory redistricting commission would provide transparency for voters to partake in the map-drawing process with commissioners who equally represent democrats, republicans, and independent voters. This would help rebuild constituents' confidence in our state's democracy and assuage some of the disenfranchisement that many voters feel.
Voters deserve to have their voices truly heard and have their votes count with fair redistricting practices. Please vote to pass HB 1426 to establish an advisory redistricting commission.
