Please, vote NO on HB1605 on February 6 in the K-12 Subcommittee.
As HB1605 is written, it bans all flags at school excpet the American flag and the Tennessee flag. It is common to display various flags in world language and history classes. If the bill is amended to allow exceptions, then flags that are still not permitted will subject the bill to higher scrutinity in the courts because of First Amendment questions. I urge the subcommittee to take a close look at what flags would be left out and think about the litigation that would result. The language of the bill and the amendment are highly restrictive. Is there really a way to clean up the bill and avoid the problems presented in testimony on January 30? It seems unlikely.
