Please, vote NO on SB1722/HB1605 on February 14 in the Education Committee.
As the bill was originally written, it bans all flags at school excpet the American flag and the Tennessee flag. The amendment would allow exceptions. Flags that are still not permitted with the amendment would subject the bill to higher scrutinity in the courts because of First Amendment questions. I urge the committee to take a close look at what flags would be left out and think about the litigation that would result. The bill also presents difficulties with enforcement at school.
Flags are not a threat to education. Restricting flags makes it hard to teach students about our freedoms in the Constitution and Bill of Rights with any credibility.
Thank you for considering my views.
