SB2766/HB1634 is on notice in the Senate Education Committee and in the House K-12 Subcommittee. Please, vote NO on the bill when it comes before you for consideration.
Bullying rates for LGBTQ students are higher than the rate for their peers. We should be doing more to prevent bullying and discrimination, not going in the opposite direction. Policy sends a signal to administrators, teachers, and students about what is important. To remove policies that protect students, as this bill does, is a dangerous step backwards.
This bill is also a misleading signal for our schools. The U.S. Department of Education on June 16, 2021 made it clear that they view Title IX as protecting students from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and they will enforce it accordingly. We should not put our schools in a bind between federal and state requirements.
Thank you for considering my views.
