Please support HB 1014 for school districts to adopt policies to promote student voter registration. This bill allows school districts and private high schools to develop programs to inform high school students about registering to vote. High school is the time and place to get registered to vote!
Most parents work during the hours that town/city halls are open for voter registration, so many students are currently on their own. This lack of support is reflected in our voter registration statistics, where only 15.6% of eligible 18-year-old potential NH voters are registered to vote - half of the nationwide 18-year-old registration rate of 30.6%. With all of this in mind, it is clear that educators have a vital role to play in welcoming young people into our democracy and instilling a lifelong interest in voting and good citizenship.
We must ensure that our future generations have the resources necessary to partake in democracy and fix our current issue of under-representation for youth voters. HB 1014 is a step in the right direction to give every voter - who wants to be involved in voting - every opportunity to participate.
