Call for Immediate Humanitarian Ceasefire and Polio Vaccination Program in Gaza

We, the undersigned, call for immediate action on the following points:

1. Global Health Security: With most of the world no longer routinely protected from wild-type poliovirus, urgent measures are needed to prevent a devastating global epidemic. The virus’s rapid spread in Gaza poses a significant risk of international transmission, threatening populations worldwide.

2. Immediate Ceasefire: We demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate the safe delivery and administration of 1.2 million polio vaccines to children, as planned by the World Health Organization (WHO).

3. Guaranteed Humanitarian Access: We call for "absolute freedom of movement" for humanitarian workers and medical supplies, ensuring that the vaccines can reach all targeted children under the age of eight without delay.

4. Restoration of Healthcare Facilities: We urge the restoration of the remaining functional hospitals and primary healthcare facilities in Gaza, which are currently operating at less than half their capacity due to the ongoing conflict.

5. Reconstruction of Essential Infrastructure: We demand the immediate reconstruction of Gaza’s sewage and water treatment facilities, which have been severely damaged, creating ideal conditions for the spread of polio and other infectious diseases.

6. Accountability and Transparency: We call for international monitoring of the vaccine rollout to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution and administration processes.

7. Support for Civilian Populations: We demand that the international community provide continuous support to the civilian population in Gaza, ensuring access to clean water, sanitation, and essential health services.

Rationale:
The recent detection of polio in Gaza's wastewater underscores the urgent need for a coordinated global response. The ongoing conflict has severely compromised the region’s healthcare infrastructure, exacerbating the risk of a large-scale outbreak. A ceasefire is essential to protect the health and lives of vulnerable children and to prevent the further spread of this debilitating disease.

We urge immediate and decisive action to protect the health and human rights of the people of Gaza.
