I am writing to urge you to cosponsor H.R. 5492 / S. 2923, the Protect Adoptees and American Families Act. For decades, a gap in federal law has left many individuals, who were legally adopted into the United States by U.S. citizen parents, without citizenship, putting them at risk of immigration actions and even deportation.
The Protect Adoptees and American Families Act closes this loophole once and for all, guaranteeing that every adoptee brought to the United States through adoption has the same rights as any other American. Led by Senators Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Susan Collins (R-ME) and Representatives Adam Smith (D-WA) and Don Bacon (R-NE), this bill has earned growing bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress. These individuals were brought to the U.S. legally as children and adopted into American families. They have grown up here; America is their home.
By cosponsoring the PAAF Act, you can provide security and peace of mind to thousands of adoptees and their families, demonstrating your commitment to family. Please cosponsor the Protect Adoptees and American Families Act and advocate for its swift passage. Your leadership will make a significant difference in the lives of adopted people in America.
I look forward to your support for this important legislation.
