Though last week’s announcement reduced the number of potential school closures to five in the 2025-26 school year, I am concerned that the district still plans to close 17 to 21 schools, phasing them in over the next few years. This approach continues to harm our communities, and the plan should be withdrawn entirely.
As Sarah Clark pointed out in The Seattle Times, this is not a retreat but a slowdown. Even closing five schools will only save $7.5 million out of a nearly $100 million deficit, while disrupting students' learning and dismantling school communities when they need stability the most.
Research and past experience show that closures undermine student outcomes, especially for those furthest from educational justice. To continue this path without data linking it to improved student outcomes would be a mistake.
Instead of closures and cuts, I urge you to push for alternative solutions. This includes advocating with the state legislature for more funding, increasing enrollment, and addressing long-standing equity issues. We need a multi-year plan that doesn’t just rely on cuts, but looks instead to revenue generation and better planning.
Please vote against closing any schools. Work with our communities and the legislature to solve the budget crisis and build a stronger, more equitable school system.
