Summary

Right now Congress is considering proposals that would slash healthcare and other vital public services like SNAP - just so they can fund trillions of dollars in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and large corporations. Now is the time to tell our Nebraska members of Congress that they must protect our health care!

Medicaid is a lifeline for coverage and a foundational source of economic and health security for 80 million Americans, including over 320,000 Nebraskans. Yet, some members of Congress are attempting to make massive cuts to Medicaid and other essential programs to pay for tax cuts for the extremely wealthy. This would devastate access to health coverage in our country as we know it.

You can use the example script below - choose a few points that matter most to YOU, and you can also share your personal experience with health care access and Medicaid:

My name is [YOUR NAME] and I live in [TOWN]. I’m calling to urge [member name] to protect our health care.

Medicaid is important to Nebraskans.

It keeps children, seniors, people with disabilities, pregnant people, and adults with low incomes healthy so that our communities stay healthy and our hospitals stay open.

It covers 1 in 3 births, pays 60,000 providers, covers over half of all nursing home residents, and covers over 95,000 Nebraskans in rural counties.

I urge [member name] to oppose any and all cuts to Medicaid, including work requirements. Many people lose coverage through work requirements, and work requirements don’t work - most Medicaid enrollees are already working, and work requirements lead to improper disenrollments that impact entire families.

Making any cuts to Medicaid would mean:

Taking health care coverage away from millions of people, including children, pregnant people, people in nursing homes, and those living with a disability or chronic illness;

Increasing health care costs for everyone, including medical debt for millions; and

Destabilizing hospitals and health care systems that we all rely on, especially in our rural communities.
