We are calling on you to hold a public hearing with xAI and key stakeholders to address the company’s paused water reuse facility and its broader impact on the Memphis Sand Aquifer.
This facility was presented as a core commitment to protecting our water resources. Its indefinite delay—without clear explanation or timeline—demands public accountability. A hearing is necessary to ensure transparency, answer critical questions, and reaffirm the City and County’s commitment to safeguarding our drinking water.
I am seeking clarity on several key issues, including:
- The current status of construction and whether it meets “substantial construction” requirements;
- The reason for the indefinite pause; and
- A clear timeline for completion.
Additionally, there are important questions about xAI’s current and projected water use from the Memphis Sand Aquifer, and how the delay of this facility may impact our long-term drinking water supply.
A public forum that includes xAI, Memphis Light, Gas & Water, Public Works, the Shelby County Health Department, and the Groundwater Control Board would provide an opportunity to address these questions transparently and collaboratively.
