I am calling on you to hold a public hearing with xAI and key stakeholders to address the indefinite pause of the water reuse facility and its impact on the Memphis Sand Aquifer.
xAI committed to building this facility as a core component of its operations—promising to significantly reduce groundwater use and protect Memphis’s drinking water. That commitment has now been delayed without clear explanation, raising serious concerns about accountability.
The public deserves answers to pressing questions: Does the project meet contractual requirements for “substantial construction”? How much water is currently being withdrawn from the aquifer, and how will that demand grow? What impact will this pause have on promised environmental and economic benefits? And what steps will the City and County take to ensure that commitments tied to public land and resources are enforced?
A public hearing is essential to restore trust, ensure transparency, and reaffirm your commitment to protecting our community’s most vital resource.
I urge you to act promptly.
