I urge you to vote NO on SB955 in the Senate Health & Welfare Committee on Wednesday.
This bill protects health care providers from suffering adverse action if they refuse to participate in a procedure that they say goes against their conscience. But I fear it could go further and allow providers to turn people away against whom they have animus. Can the sponsor guarantee that this bill only protects providers from having to do certain procedures and does not protect them when they discriminate against patients because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, nationality, political party affilitation, etc.?
I particularly worry that this is a problem in rural areas of the state where there are few providers and some people don't have the ability to travel far. What are the protections for patients in the bill?
Thank you for considering my views.
