Summary

For everyone to have access to the good life, we must ensure that Nebraska workers are paid a living wage. That’s why the minimum wage increase (Initiative 433) passed overwhelmingly on the ballot — and why we must now all fight to protect it.

When Nebraskans went to the ballot box in 2022, we voted to gradually raise our state’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by January 2026 — and to automatically adjust it for cost of living increases starting in 2027. More than 300 Nebraskans businesses also signed on to support Initiative 433, acknowledging the many reasons why paying workers a fair wage is good for business and good for the economy.

Despite nearly 60% of Nebraska voters supporting this change, the Nebraska Legislature now seeks to undermine our state’s minimum wage law.

LB258, introduced by Senator Jane Raybould, would harm workers by severely weakening Nebraska’s minimum wage law by carving out a subminimum wage for youth workers AND restricting the cost of living increases that Nebraskans voted for.

Will you email your senator and tell them to oppose LB258? Here are some ideas to get you started:

I signed the Raise the Wage petition and I voted for the initiative, and I understood that it would result in the minimum wage automatically increasing every year to account for inflation.

The harm to young working Nebraskans if you pass this bill would be significant, particularly to those in low-income households, whose earnings are critical in helping their families make ends meet as well as in meeting young people’s needs, such as saving to further their education.

A ballot initiative that garners nearly 60% of the vote is a clear indicator of where Nebraskans stand on an issue. By carving out a subminimum wage for young Nebraska workers AND restricting the cost of living increases that we voted for, LB258 stands in direct opposition to the will of Nebraskans across the state. I urge you to respect the will of the people and OPPOSE LB258.

Nebraskans understand that for everyone to have access to the good life, we must ensure that Nebraska workers are paid a living wage.
