I urge you to vote NO on HB1270 in the Education Committee on Tuesday.
This bill opens the door to any teacher, school employee, student, or contractor to demean other teachers school employees, students, or contractors. The legislation seems to say there are no consequences if someone does not treat another person with basic respect in our schools.
Using a person's pronouns is easy, takes nothing away from anyone, and it makes the school environment safer for all teachers, school employees, and students.
Litigation is still an issue: This bill offers a false sense of security to those who do not want to use other people's pronouns. While the legislation shields them from lawsuits in state courts, they CANNOT do so in federal courts. Encouraging teachers, school employees, contractors, and students to ignore someone's pronouns is an invitation to expensive litigation. The Supreme Court's Bostock v. Clayton County still stands and it protects LGBTQ people in the workplace.
Thank you for considering my views.
