We, the undersigned, submit this petition to Nebraska lawmakers urging them to oppose LB 415, which rolls back the critical paid sick leave protections an overwhelming majority of Nebraskans just voted to adopt. Voters spoke loudly and clearly last November: Nebraska workers should not have to choose between their health and their paycheck. LB 415 directly undermines the clear will of the voters by restricting access to paid sick leave for thousands of Nebraska workers who otherwise would be protected, including those who work at smaller businesses, young workers, and those with seasonal and temporary ag jobs. Nebraskans voted overwhelmingly to provide access to paid sick leave for all workers - the legislature should honor that vote.

Summary

Last November, voters across Nebraska overwhelmingly passed Initiative 436, a statewide ballot initiative that gives all workers the ability to earn and use paid sick leave. Nearly 75% of Nebraskans approved Initiative 436. That includes voters in 89 of 93 counties and a majority of voters in every single legislative district. More than 200 local Nebraska businesses also supported allowing workers to earn and use paid sick leave. Now, the will of Nebraska voters is being ignored by the Nebraska Legislature. The Nebraska Legislature voted to advance LB415 (Sen. Beau Ballard), which would remove paid sick leave protections from 140,000 hardworking Nebraskans – including people working at small businesses, seasonal and temporary agricultural workers, and workers under the age of 16. Additionally, LB415 exempts businesses with 10 or fewer employees from having to provide paid sick leave.
