Dear [Your Elected Official],

HB622 and HB923 are up for consideration in the House State & Local Government Committee on April 9. Both deal with the issues of diversity, equity, and inlusion in local government and public higher education. I urge you to vote NO on both bills.
Mainly I am tired of the Legislature trying to micromanage local government and public higher education in this state! You need to let those closest to the action make more decisions.
The bills seem to assume there are "quotas" in our local governments and public institutions of higher education. The evidence is lacking. 
The bills imply that job candidates from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds are not qualified. That is insulting and erroneous.
The bills pretend that there has been no history of discrimination on the job. That is naive.
Jumping on a bandwagon of attacking the words "diversity, equity, and inclusion" is bad public policy. We need a more careful approach to hiring and retaining great employees in Tennessee's local governments and higher education institutions. When you allow local governments and public colleges and universities their proper authority, they can pursue the right approach.
I hope you will ask probing questions of the sponsor when the bills come up such as how local governments and public colleges and universities are going to defend themselves when they get sued for discrimination.
