Stop SB-509 — Protect Free Speech & Hindu Voices!
Sb 509 for ujoin
Dear [Your Elected Official],

I am writing as your constituent to urgently express my concern about SB-509.

While I appreciate the goal of protecting Californians from foreign harassment, the bill’s vague language risks unfairly targeting Indian American and American Hindu communities. Without clear protections, SB-509 could wrongfully criminalize lawful advocacy, cultural expression, and community participation — rights guaranteed by our Constitution.

SB-509, as written, functions like a Trojan Horse. Under the guise of community protection, it risks smuggling in profiling and discrimination against American Hindus, casting suspicion over our cultural and civic activities. It threatens to silence our voices in public life and discourage participation in the very democratic processes that make California strong.

Moreover, issues of transnational repression and foreign interference are already addressed through robust federal laws and enforcement mechanisms. California does not need to replicate federal authority at the state level, especially in ways that could harm minority communities. The necessary tools to address genuine threats already exist, without risking overreach into innocent, constitutionally protected activities.

I respectfully urge you to recognize that federal safeguards are in place, and avoid creating redundant laws that risk unintended harm and vote against SB-509.

Please act now to safeguard the rights of all Californians. I trust in your leadership to uphold our shared values of freedom, diversity, and justice.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a constituent from [Your City], California.

I’m calling to express my deep concern about SB-509.

While I understand that the goal of this bill is to protect Californians from foreign harassment, I believe it is dangerously overbroad. SB-509 risks unfairly targeting Indian American and American Hindu communities like mine. It could wrongfully criminalize lawful advocacy, cultural expression, and community participation — activities that are fully protected by our Constitution.

In fact, I want to point out that federal laws already provide robust protection against transnational repression. California doesn’t need to duplicate those laws, especially in a way that could harm minority communities through vague or overreaching enforcement.

Frankly, SB-509 feels like a Trojan Horse. It might seem protective on the surface, but it opens the door to profiling and silencing Americans Hindus, discouraging us from fully participating in public life.

I respectfully urge the [Senator/Assembly Member] to:

Recognize that existing federal laws are sufficient for true cases of transnational repression and vote against SB-509.

Please let the [Senator/Assembly Member] know this issue is very important to me and many others in our district. We want to protect the rights of all Californians, and I trust in their leadership to do so.

Thank you for taking my call!
