A new draft permit has been released for a first-of-its-kind water reuse facility in Memphis that would serve the xAI Colossus data center, TVA Allen Gas Plant, and Nucor Steel.

The project would take up to 13.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated wastewater from the T.E. Maxson plant for further treatment that would otherwise flow into the Mississippi River. Using biological and membrane technology, this recycled water would be used for industrial cooling instead of drawing from our Memphis Sand Aquifer. Any excess or residual wastewater would return to the Maxson plant.

While this approach could help reduce strain on our drinking water source, and Boxtown's water infrastructure, it also introduces new water reuse methods that the public has had little opportunity to understand or weigh in on. That’s why we're calling on TDEC to hold a public hearing—to give community members, scientists, and advocates a chance to ask questions, learn how the system works, and comment on potential water quality impacts.

Take Action: Ask TDEC to hold a public hearing so the community can be part of the conversation.
