The Trump administration has targeted nonprofit organizations on ideological grounds, whether by attempting to rescind nonprofit tax status, freeze federal funding, undertake politically motivated investigations and audits, or engage in other unlawful, harmful actions. I urge you to take immediate action to protect nonprofit organizations from these unlawful attacks by the Trump administration.
Nonprofit organizations exist solely to serve the public good, operating in every community in the United States. Nonprofits address a wide range of community needs from job training, healthcare, and financial literacy and budgeting to education, food security, substance abuse prevention and recovery programs, and more. Many nonprofit organizations are faith-based; all of them are community-focused. Together, nonprofit organizations deliver vital and essential services in communities, addressing critical needs unmet by local, state, and federal governments.
American democracy depends on a strong, vibrant and independent civil society, but a robust civil society cannot survive when political leaders decide which institutions deserve protections based on ideology or political convenience.
