Summary

<p>There are a handful of&nbsp;bills proposed in North Carolina that would advance media literacy education for students.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">SB 511</span>&nbsp;would require instruction in informational literacy across public schools. Age-appropriate instruction would include critical thinking skills and how to use information resources, methods of research, the differences between facts, points of view, and opinions, how to access print and digital library resources, and the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information.&nbsp;</li> <li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">SB 640</span> would require instruction on artifical intelligence which would include basic concepts of AI and understanding AI systems and AI-created content and responsible and ethical use of AI.</li> <li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">HB 959</span> would have local school boards provide instruction on social media and its effects on health, including social, emotional, mental, and physical health. Instruction would include the negative effects of social media on mental health, distribution of misinformation, methods of manipulation on social media, how to maintain personal security, and how to identify cyberbullying and predatory behavior.&nbsp;</li> </ul> <p>If you reside in&nbsp;North Carolina, now is the time to reach out to your legislators and urge them to support these bills.
