Issue:

On 5/12, the House Agriculture Committee released a bill to cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to millions of struggling households. In order to fund the President's agenda, the Committee proposes to slash funding by at least $290 billion over the next decade, among other deep funding cuts to basic needs programs like Medicaid.

The Ag Committee plans to enact these cuts by:

Forcing cash-strapped states to pay for a portion of SNAP benefits, and a higher percentage of administrative costs;

Raising the age for work requirement, impacting about 11 million people;

Rescinding the promise to raise SNAP benefits in the future by limiting updates to the Thrifty Food Plan;

and other measures.

We know that SNAP cuts and changes of this magnitude would devastate families already struggling with high food prices and other costs of living, especially if SNAP cuts are combined with cuts to Medicaid and other important programs.

Why This Matters
• 47 million Americans struggle with food insecurity.
• 42 million people rely on SNAP.
• At just $6/day per person, SNAP isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline for families, seniors, and children.
• Cuts or restrictions will increase hunger and harm the economy, including farmers and retailers.
• Every $1 billion in SNAP benefits increases GDP by $1.54 billion.

Call to Action:
