Michigan House Bill 4445 Threatens Deer Health and Management
Dear [Your Elected Official],

I am writing as your constituent and a concerned Michigan deer hunter to respectfully urge you to vote “NO” on House Bill 4445 (HB4445).

As currently written, HB 4445 would legalize the use of bait to hunt white-tailed deer during open season. While this may appear to be a convenience for some hunters, the broader consequences of legalizing baiting are deeply troubling—both for deer herd health and for the integrity of our hunting traditions.

Baiting significantly increases the risk of disease transmission, including chronic wasting disease (CWD) and bovine tuberculosis, by unnaturally concentrating deer around single food sources. These diseases threaten the long-term health of Michigan’s deer population and the sustainability of our state’s hunting heritage.

In addition to disease concerns, baiting poses several other risks:

· It disrupts natural deer movement and habitat use.

· It increases nocturnal behavior, reducing the effectiveness and safety of hunting.

· It draws in non-target species, increasing predation and ecological imbalance.

· It can inflate local deer populations beyond the habitat’s natural carrying capacity.

There is a growing consensus among hunters and conservationists that baiting should not be expanded where it is currently illegal.

As your constituent, I ask that you prioritize science-based wildlife management by opposing HB 4445. Our state has worked hard to protect and manage its deer herds responsibly. This bill threatens to undo that progress.

Thank you for your time and your service to the people of Michigan. I urge you to stand with conservation-minded hunters and vote “NO” on House Bill 4445.

Sincerely,
