I write to you as a proud member of the American Hindu community, and as someone deeply concerned by the growing threat of terrorism targeting innocent civilians around the world.
Our community is devastated by the horrific terrorist attack carried out by radical Islamists in Pahalgam, India, on April 22, 2025. This cowardly and brutal act claimed 26 innocent lives, left many more injured, and shattered the peace of a close-knit region. Its impact has reverberated far beyond the borders of India — we feel that pain deeply here in the United States.
I urge you to stand with us in unequivocally condemning this senseless act of violence and to express solidarity with the victims, their grieving families, and the people of India.
The Pahalgam attack was not just an assault on individuals — it was an attack on the shared human values of peace, tolerance, and dignity. It is a tragic reminder of the continued threat posed by cross-border terrorism, particularly from elements operating out of Pakistan, and the need for global resolve in confronting such forces.
India, the world’s largest democracy and a steadfast U.S. ally, must have the sovereign right to defend its citizens from terrorism, just as the United States does. Support for India in this moment is not only a matter of bilateral relations — it is a matter of principle and of our shared commitment to fighting terrorism in all its forms.
I respectfully call on you to:
- Denounce the Pahalgam terrorist attack in the strongest possible terms;
- Stand in solidarity with India and its people; and
- Affirm support for fellow democracy India’s right to protect its citizens from terrorist threats, including those originating across its borders.
Your voice as a Member of Congress carries enormous weight. In speaking out, you will be joining millions who believe that terrorism can never be justified. Please represent our voice at the upcoming hearing on May 22nd in the South and Central Asia Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Let us stand united in mourning, in resolve, and in our commitment to building a safer, more peaceful world.
Thank you for your your service to our great nation.
Sincerely,
