I’m writing to urge you to once again stand strong against any provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that would cut or restrict access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Medicaid.
SNAP helps more than 487,000 New Mexicans, including children, older adults, veterans, and working families. In rural areas served by The Food Depot, food insecurity rates are especially high and SNAP is often the only consistent support available.
These programs don’t just help families put food on the table. SNAP supports local economies. In 2023, 1,685 retailers in New Mexico redeemed over $1.28 billion in SNAP benefits. Every SNAP dollar generates up to $1.80 in economic activity, especially in small towns where grocery stores and farmers’ markets rely on SNAP to stay open.
SNAP and Medicaid work together. Nearly 40% of New Mexicans who receive SNAP also rely on Medicaid. Cuts to either program would increase hardship, reduce access to food and care, and place greater strain on food banks and health providers.
Thank you for standing up for New Mexicans. I hope you’ll continue to fight for SNAP and Medicaid and reject any proposals that would weaken these essential programs.
