Dear U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue,
We are calling on you to help end the yearly tragedy disguised as a festival in Yulin, China, where thousands of dogs and cats are slaughtered for meat every June.
Many of these animals are stolen companions who are transported in stacked cages without food, water, or rest, and killed in open markets. A new survey found that nearly 90% of Yulin residents rarely or never eat dog or cat meat. 88% say banning the trade would not affect their lives.
Cities like Shenzhen and Zhuhai have already banned the dog and cat meat trade.
But without national animal protection laws in China, local change needs outside pressure.
We call on you to help outlaw the slaughter, sale, and consumption of dog and cat meat, shut down markets and stalls involved in this trade, and enforce roadblocks and inspections to prevent trafficking.
As a respected diplomatic leader, you have the ability to raise this issue in high-level discussions and urge responsible officials in China to take action. You represent the voice of millions who care deeply about animals and believe this cruelty should end.
Please speak up for Yulin's dogs and cats and help protect them from another year of suffering.
We urge you to raise this issue now, loudly and firmly.
