I'm writing because I'm very concerned about reports that the Administration is seriously considering a Russian proposal to cede Ukrainian territory, including areas Russia has not been able to seize after three years of its full-scale invasion. Rewarding Russia at the diplomatic table for what it failed to achieve on the battlefield would make a mockery of peace through strength, and would repeat Obama's mistake of giving up Ukrainian territory for Russian promises of peace.
After over 10 years of war, Russia still does not control 30% of the Donetsk region, including key fortress cities of Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka and others. As the President confirmed, Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers since the start of this year trying to advance along the front, while Ukrainian defenders lost 8,000 during the same period. Rewarding Russia at the diplomatic table for what it failed to achieve on the battlefield would make a mockery of peace through strength.
I urge you to tell President Trump to follow through on his initial promise of imposing secondary sanctions on countries that continue doing business with Russia. Only peace through strength will stop Russia.
