To the Sheriff, Crook County,
Dear John Gautney, Sheriff, Crook County,
We call on the Crook County Sheriff’s Office to take immediate action following the shooting of a companion cat named Pumpkin in Oregon.
The man accused of this act, a local pastor, has since been charged with first-degree animal abuse. Yet despite the severity of the violence, he still retains access to firearms.
This puts other animals at immediate risk and sends a dangerous message that shooting animals carries no urgent consequences.
We demand the immediate revocation of this individual’s firearm access while the case proceeds through the courts. We also call for mandatory mental health evaluations for gun holders to help prevent acts of violence before animals are harmed.
Accountability and prevention must come before another animal is shot, discarded, and left to suffer.
