Imagine you’re away on vacation or visiting family when a letter arrives at your house. It’s from the Secretary of State’s office, saying you’ve been picked for a “random” voter audit. You don’t see it in time. You miss the deadline. When you get home, you find out you’ve been taken off the voter rolls, even though you’re an eligible voter who’s done nothing wrong.

Or imagine you’re a U.S. citizen, but your information gets run through a federal database and you’re mistakenly flagged as a non-citizen. That kind of mistake happens more often than people realize, and fixing it can take weeks or months, if it gets fixed at all.

This isn’t some far-fetched scenario. This is exactly what could happen if HB 1062 becomes law.

The bill gives the Secretary of State’s office broad power to recheck voters who are already registered, using state and federal databases that are known to be inaccurate. This bill doesn’t fix a real problem, it simply serves to fuel the false narrative that our elections are being overrun by fraud.

Please reach out to your representative and tell them to oppose HB 1062. Our time, money, and energy should be spent making it easier for people to participate in democracy, not creating new ways to push eligible voters out.
