Support the Virginia Bicyclist Safety Act

I’m asking you to support HB661, a simple safety bill that can help prevent serious injuries and deaths for people riding bicycles on Virginia roads.
HB661 maintains protections for pedestrians and drivers. What it does is update a few rules in ways that are proven to reduce crashes for people bicycling:
Safety Yield: Let's a person on a bicycle treat a stop sign like a yield when it’s safe. This is recommended by federal traffic safety experts, is already legal in 11 states and DC, and has helped reduce bicycle crashes in Delaware.
Proceed on Walk Signal: Allows a person on a bicycle to proceed with the walk signal at intersections, where the walk signal changes before the traffic light (leading pedestrian interval).
Riding Two Abreast: Allows two people to ride side-by-side when the speed limit is 35mph or less. This would improve visibility and make passing safer, while still requiring single-file riding when it would slow traffic on fast two-lane roads.
 These are small, practical changes that can prevent crashes and save lives.

Every year in Virginia, people are seriously injured or killed while riding bicycles on our roads. HB661 is a commonsense safety update that can help prevent these crashes, and it now needs Senate approval.
