HB 1277 makes absentee voting easier without making it less secure.

Currently, voters must get paperwork notarized or submit copies of identification just to apply for an absentee ballot. This can mean extra trips, fees, or barriers for people who cannot easily leave home.

HB 1277 allows voters to use their driver’s license number when applying for an absentee ballot instead of notarized documents. This change keeps elections secure while reducing unnecessary paperwork. It also ensures absentee voting is more accessible for seniors, people with disabilities, working families, and others who vote from home.

On Tuesday March 3, the House Election Law Committee voted 9-8 to recommend HB 1277 as Inexpedient to Legislate, despite 3 members of the committee being sponsors on this bill themselves. When the ranking Democratic member asked for an explanation, none was offered.
