I supported the Raise the Wage initiative to ensure that hardworking Nebraskans could meet their and their families’ needs. While the legislature decided to undermine our vote, this is an opportunity for Lincolnites to restore the wage laws that we passed. Please vote to support the minimum wage ordinance so that our wages are able to keep pace with increased cost of living and youth workers are paid a fair wage.

Nebraskans understand that for everyone to have access to the good life, we must ensure that Nebraska workers are paid a living wage. By artificially keeping cost of living increases low and creating a subminimum wage for youth workers, our legislature undermined the will of what voters approved in 2022. This ordinance would restore critical wage protections for workers in Lincoln and I urge you to support it.

Summary

This coming Monday, May 4, the Lincoln City Council will hold a public hearing on Councilmember James Michael Bowers’ proposal to ensure that Lincolnites are paid a fair wage by restoring the wage protections the state legislature recently removed.  In 2022, almost 60% of Nebraska voters and 7 out of 10 Lincoln voters approved a ballot measure to increase Nebraska’s minimum wage and to ensure our wages continue to grow as the cost of living increases. Unfortunately, during this past legislative session, state lawmakers rolled back these popular wage protections in two harmful ways: (1) they created a subminimum wage for youth workers, who often are working to provide vital income for their families, and (2) they restricted the annual wage adjustments and all but ensured that Nebraska’s wages over time will once again fail to keep pace with rising costs. In response, Councilmember Bowers introduced an ordinance to restore the wage laws Lincolnites so broadly supported by ensuring youth workers are paid a fair wage and removing the harmful cap on annual cost of living increases for workers in Lincoln. We need to send a strong message to the Lincoln City Council: They must uphold the will of Lincoln voters, restore the critical wage protections we passed in 2022, and protect the right of Lincolnites to earn a fair wage by supporting this Ordinance.
