<p>We need your help in stopping the recently <a href="https://www.usda.gov/about-usda/news/press-releases/2026/04/23/usda-advances-reorganization-and-restructuring-research-education-and-economics-mission-area-improve">announced</a> USDA-Research, Education, and Economics (USDA-REE) restructuring and closure of the Beltsville Agriculture Research Station.</p>
<p>Similar USDA-REE restructuring in 2019 caused massive <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/IF/PDF/IF11527/IF11527.3.pdf">losses</a> in institutional knowledge, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/02/02/963207129/usda-research-agencies-decimated-by-forced-move-undoing-the-damage-wont-be-easy">reductions in economic reports, and delayed disbursement of funds to researchers and universities</a>. Lastly, the closure of Beltsville would cause substantial disruption to research continuity, especially <a href="https://ofrf.org/news/long-term-research-cavigelli/">long-term studies</a>. All of this will hurt farmers, especially in this economy.</p>
<p>Despite the <a href="https://www.govexec.com/management/2026/04/usda-moving-forward-various-reorgs-despite-legal-questions-and-bipartisan-concerns/412918/">legal uncertainty</a> of restructuring and express <a href="https://appropriations.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/republicans-appropriations.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/fy27-bipartisan-manager-s-amendment.pdf">forbiddance</a> for funds to be used unilaterally to close Beltsville by USDA without permission from Congress, it seems likely that the USDA will press on. </p>
<p>Please fill-out the form on the right and with a message asking your member of Congress to prevent USDA-REE restructuring and Beltsville closure. </p>
