Petition to Save Black-crowned Night Heron
I stand with NYC Bird Alliance in calling on New York State and New York City agencies to support urgent conservation action for the Black-crowned Night Heron, which could disappear from New York—New Jersey Harbor as soon as 2037.
We are calling on NYS DEC and NYC Parks to support more research and institute better protections for the Black-crowned Night Heron, so we can address their decline, ensure the health of our Harbor, and save this iconic New York species.
I urge immediate action to:
- Designate Black-crowned Night Heron as endangered or threatened in New York State.
- Provide better signage on breeding islands to reduce human disturbance.
- Strengthen predator management across New York City to give Black-crowned Night Heron and other harbor birds a better chance of survival.
- Invest in long-term research to understand what is driving this decline and guide effective conservation action.
The Black-crowned Night Heron is one of New York Harbor's most iconic residents. Together, we can save this bird.
