Protect Our CF Community Members on Medi-Cal

Dear [Your Elected Official],

As your constituent, I urge you to support seniors and people with disabilities by rejecting the Governor’s May Revision proposal to reduce the Medi-Cal asset limit to just $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.

When the original $2,000 asset limit was established in 1989, the cost of living in California was significantly lower than it is today. Reinstating this low asset limit of just $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples—including saving, cash, investments, and second vehicles—is an outdated policy that could result in an estimated 62,000 people losing coverage within the first two years. While this proposal may generate short-term cost savings, the long-term consequences of leaving seniors and people with disabilities without health coverage would place greater financial strain on individuals, families, and the state.

Members of the cystic fibrosis (CF) community would be directly impacted by this proposal, as 25% of the approximately 2,500 people with CF in California rely on Medi-Cal for some or all of their health coverage. CF is a genetic, progressive, and very complex life-threatening disease that requires continuous, specialized care. For people with CF, forgoing healthcare is not an option.

The Governor’s proposal would force hundreds of Californians with CF to spend down their savings and face increased financial, nutritional, and housing insecurity to maintain Medi-Cal coverage.

This is not a partisan issue. Seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals with CF are counting on you to protect access to Medi-Cal coverage by opposing the Governor’s May Revision asset limit proposal. We appreciate your continued leadership on this urgent issue.

Sincerely,
