Women’s health is primary care, and people see their midwives frequently, not just for pregnancy, but anytime in our lives for annual wellness exams, breast and cervical cancer screenings, contraceptives, menopause care, and overall health. Midwives may be the first to diagnose someone’s diabetes, hypertension or depression. Primary care promotes health and catches potential problems early, preventing severe illness and expensive medical treatments – midwifery care does just that!
This amendment ensures that midwives receive fair reimbursement for their care. This makes it more feasible and sustainable for midwifery practices to stay open, and for health systems to utilize this highly trained segment of the primary care workforce.
