Congress continues to dump billions of dollars into increasing ICE activity and violence – destabilizing local communities. Now a McCook, Nebraska, facility repurposed by Governor Jim Pillen, serves as a large-scale federal detainment camp to incarcerate immigrant community members from Nebraska and surrounding states.

This is not who we are. Nebraska is a state that welcomes our neighbors and values the community and economic contributions of local moms, dads, coworkers, neighbors, and friends.

We need policy change, NOT punishment.

Congress has not meaningfully updated the country’s immigration laws in 40 years. This leaves friends, family members, and neighbors vulnerable to immigration targeting who have been unable to access stable immigration status despite their best efforts to navigate the nation’s long outdated immigration laws. Nebraskans want immigration policy change that supports local communities and Nebraska’s future, not punishment and military deployments.

Call or email Nebraska’s members of Congress to tell them it’s time for positive, updated immigration laws that create stability for local families and communities.

My name is [YOUR NAME]. I live in [TOWN]. I’m calling to urge my member of Congress to support positive and updated immigration laws that:

[Choose 1-2]

Create stability for Nebraska communities.

Keep families together.

Support full inclusion of family members and neighbors who have been an important part of Nebraska communities for decades.

Create workable ways for longtime Nebraska community members to apply for residency and citizenship. Simple first steps would be passing the Dream & Promise Act and the Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929. (The Renewing Registry bill would update the immigration Registry, an already-existing provision of the law with a long bipartisan history, designed to provide a way for long-term community members to apply for residency. Congress traditionally periodically updated the Registry date with bipartisan support but not in the last 40 years.)

Create stability for neighbors stuck in limbo who contribute important talents in health care, aging care, agriculture, education, child care, construction, hospitality, and more.

Bring our harmfully outdated immigration laws up to the era of cell phones, for the benefit of whole communities. Our immigration laws are like roads with giant potholes and land line phones that haven’t been updated in decades.

End harmful and unnecessary detentions and deportation that are damaging local communities.

Stop funding harmful ICE actions. I urge you to work on a meaningful immigration policy that creates stability for Nebraska families, strengthens our workforce, and supports our communities.
