Thank you for your service to our state. As a Catholic and your constituent, I encourage you to support the Minnesota Starter Homes Act for the following reasons:
- Minnesotans need more homes. Too many families and neighbors are competing for too few options, which drives up housing costs. The ability to lay down roots in a home also impacts the decision to form families and have children.
- We are already facing a workforce shortage, and the demographic trends around homeownership and family formation indicate it will get worse because of affordability challenges.
- The average age of first-time homebuyers has risen from 28 years old in 1991 to 38 years old in 2025, according to the National Association of Realtors.
The Starter Homes Act will have the intended effect of increasing the supply of affordable homes for families across the state. Additionally, it could create more opportunities to care for loved ones in accessory dwellings and, perhaps, in turn, alleviate the pressures on long-term care facilities. It is certainly not the only solution, but it is an important one.
Thank you for reading this message, and please support the Starter Homes Act.
