50 States. One Mission. Mandate First Responder Elopement Training.
Every second matters when someone goes missing. Every first responder deserves the training to help bring them home safely.
Elopement is the act of wandering or leaving a safe environment. It can become a life-threatening emergency for children and adults with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, dementia, and other cognitive conditions.
In 2026, Maryland became the first state in the nation to enact legislation under Laila's Elopement Awareness & Dissemination (LEAD) Act, requiring first responder training on elopement preparedness and response for individuals at risk of elopement across the lifespan.
Now, through Laila's Gift's national Follow Our LEAD campaign, we are calling on lawmakers across all 50 states to follow Maryland's lead.
We urge every state to enact legislation requiring standardized elopement awareness, preparedness, and response training for law enforcement, emergency medical services, and 911 personnel.
Families deserve peace of mind. Communities deserve preparedness. First responders deserve the tools and training to save lives.
Sign this petition and help us make elopement first responder training the law in all 50 states.
