Support Perinatal Hospice Information for Maryland Parents
As a Catholic from your District, I am asking you to support families facing the tragic loss of their infant child by voting YES on HB 1112/SB 891.
This bill will help ensure new parents can receive information about perinatal hospice support when facing a life-limiting diagnosis in utero and the likely loss of their child just hours or days after birth.
Perinatal hospice and palliative care are specialized support services. A multidisciplinary team of professionals journeys with families from diagnosis to delivery and after, helping them to plan, remember, welcome and say goodbye to their baby.
Perinatal hospice is widely accepted by medical professionals and generally covered by maternity and newborn care insurance. It emphasizes dignity, comfort and a peaceful experience for the whole family.
Yet few Maryland families receive information about perinatal hospice. Some families are insensitively told their only option is termination, even when that is not the route they want to choose. HB1112/SB891 would ensure the State Department of Health maintains a list of perinatal hospice programs on its website and creates a printable brochure for physicians and nurse practitioners to share with families who want the information.
Research shows that 97% of parents who used perinatal hospice said they had no regrets and cherished the experience they had to process the diagnosis, collect remembrances such as photos and handprints, love, hold and meet their baby for the duration of the child’s life, no matter how brief.
Learning of a terminal diagnosis for your unborn baby is heartbreaking. Maryland parents deserve to know this option, presented in a sensitive manner, during a very difficult time.
As my legislator, please support HB 1112/SB 891 to respect the autonomy, choice, and decision making of parents, and ensure awareness of all options for a difficult pregnancy.
