CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION

The Preventing Future Pandemics Act, HR 151, was introduced by Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) and has over 175 bipartisan House cosponsors. Its companion bill, S 37, is sponsored by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). This bill would address the global public health risk posed by wildlife markets. It would also ban the import, export, and trade in live wild animals in the US for human consumption or medicine and would require the US to work with other UN member nations to urge a global ban on wildlife markets and full enforcement of laws to end wildlife trafficking. This timely and important bill would help prevent future zoonotic outbreaks and reduce the cruel exploitation of animals.

TALKING POINTS
  • It’s impossible to count the times we’ve heard the word unprecedented to describe the events of the past year and a half. But the conditions that caused the COVID-19 pandemic have many precedents: Ebola, HIV/AIDS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, and earlier SARS outbreaks all had similar origins. These zoonotic diseases spread through unhealthy contact between humans and animals—usually through cruel exploitation such as animal trafficking.
  • Alarmingly, almost 75 percent of the world’s emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in origin.
  • Experts at the World Health Organization, the UN Environment Program and elsewhere know how to prevent these deadly outbreaks: all countries must end animal trafficking and close the wildlife markets where animals are sold and killed for food or commerce.
