Oppose SB 1166 - Oppose National Standards Being Imposed on Our Local Schools

Dear [title] [last name],

I am writing to you and asking you to oppose SB 1166 "An Act Concerning Implementation of the Connecticut School Climate Policy". This legislation will subject the school climate policies enacted in our public schools to follow national standards created by a private entity. Although the bill refers to allowing the local school boards and various members of the school community input in enacting these standards, the legislation requires the locally established standards adhere to the standards established by this private entity. I strongly support local control of our schools and oppose them being dictated to by a national organization. 
   Additionally, this legislation raises serious concerns about limitations it may place on the freedom of expression by students, school board members and parents. Every member of the "school community", which specifically includes parents, students, the members of the school board and other community groups under SB 1166, must adhere to the school climate standards. If any of the members of the "school community" violate any of the school climate standards they must follow a path of restorative justice to once again be a respected member of that "school community'.
   I have many other concerns about this legislation and its impact on free expression,  local control, parental rights and additional administrative burdens.
  Please vote "No" on SB 1166.

Summary

The Connecticut Catholic Public Affairs Conference has serious concerns about SB 1166 which has been approved by the Connecticut General Assembly’s Education Committee and will soon be considered by the State Senate. Although the legislation would not impact Catholic schools, it would very likely impact the ability of students from Catholic or other religious families to live out their faith in a public school setting. If enacted, SB 1166 will make every local board of education, every student, and every parent to eventually submit to supposedly locally established standards based on the guidelines promoted by a private, national organization known as the National School Climate Center. These guidelines are referred to as the National School Climate Standards
