CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION

In January, Representative Kay Khan and Senator Anne Gobi filed HB1189/SB1206 "An Act Relative to Out-of-Hospital Birth Access and Safety." This bill would create a pathway for licensure of Certified Professional Midwives in Massachusetts. This bill will improve the safety of home birth, promote public health, increase access to maternity care, and save money.

TALKING POINTS
  • Home births are safe, and save money, but currently Massachusetts does not license Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), the experts in out-of-hospital birth.
  • Massachusetts is falling behind. 33 other states now license CPMs, and 7 more have legislation pending.
  • Licensure is good for home birth safety, public health, and increases access to maternity care.
