Cosponsor SB1206 for Licensed Midwives!

Senator,

As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor SB1206, "An Act Relative to Out-of-Hospital Birth Access and Safety," a bill I strongly support. Massachusetts families deserve access to qualified maternity care providers in the birth setting of their choice.

Currently, hundreds of Massachusetts families seeking home birth each year must choose an unlicensed provider. 33 other states license Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), which are the experts in out-of-hospital birth. Licensure increases safety, promotes public health, creates a pathway to insurance and Medicaid coverage, and encourages integration with the broader health care system.

Organizations that support health and human rights have endorsed the bill, including: ACLU Mass, Mass NOW, League of Women Voters MA, Union of Minority Neighborhoods, Our Bodies Ourselves, Bay State Birth Coalition, and the Women's Bar Association of Massachusetts.

It is common sense for the state to provide oversight of this small, but growing, sector of health care providers who care for mothers and newborns across Massachusetts. Please cosponsor SB1206 today.
